Women-headed households are a growing constituency in today’s housing market, the result of higher divorce rates, delayed marriage, and longer life spans.

Two major household types characterize women-headed households: elderly women living alone and young to middle-aged single, divorced or separated women with families.

Homeownership rates for women-headed households are considerably lower than the national average, making women-headed households a major constituency of the rental housing market.

Efforts to increase homeownership rates for women-headed households are likely to embrace more minority and very low-income households.

Efforts to increase homeownership rates for women-headed households are likely to increase central city and suburban business.

To assist women in becoming homebuyers, HomeOwnership For Women has established a "one-stop" clearinghouse that will:

  • Reach out to women, women's groups, and community organizations.

  • Counsel women about budgeting, credit, flexible downpayment and downpayment assistance programs, locating a lender, and home maintenance.

  • Offer homeownership fairs and develop and publicize information that will educate women about the homeownership process.

  • Overcome discriminatory barriers by educating lenders that women are reliable homeowners and mortgagees.

  • Mentor, encourage, and support women who decide to make homeownership a reality rather than a dream.

  • HomeOwnership For Women is ready and waiting to open the doors to homeownership.  Invest in your future, your family, and your community today.
